Fisheries Management

Comprehensive Satellite Monitoring System (SIMON) for small-scale and artisanal fishing vessels

SIMON integrates AIS (Automatic Identification System) satellite equipment into a mobile application. This allows users, such as fishermen and shipowners, to know the real-time location of their vessel, as well as the type of event (fishing, transit, drift) and the oceanographic conditions of the sea. Furthermore, this information is integrated into a visualization platform, which enables administrators to monitor and manage artisanal and small-scale fisheries. Read more

Vision

To enhance the traceability of small-scale fishing by strengthening the connection between the ocean, the fishermen, and technology

Mission

Integrate AIS satellite positioning technology into artisanal fishing traceability platforms

Challenges

Satellite technology remains expensive and must be suitable for the operating conditions and fishing activities of artisanal vessels

Opportunity

Safety: Simon helps to keep fishermen safe by providing real-time location tracking and alerting them to potential hazards.
Efficiency: The system enhances operational efficiency by providing valuable data on fishing grounds and ocean conditions.
Compliance: Simon facilitates compliance with fisheries regulations by monitoring fishing activities transparently.
Sustainability: By improving traceability and data collection, Simon contributes to the long-term sustainability of fisheries.

Objective

To create an alternative satellite positioning system for artisanal vessels, with a primary focus on the deep-sea artisanal fleet. These vessels travel over 200 miles in search of resources such as squid and dolphin fish in high-seas fishing areas where the AIS system is crucial for the safety and preservation of the fishermen's lives.

Reach

+ 3,500 artisanal boats

+ 20,000 fishermen

↑↑ Increased safety at sea
↑↑ Contributes to traceability

Status

SIMON testing has successfully concluded, and the product is now ready for sale and commercialization

Next step

Implement a management system with the Yacila, Ancón, and Matarani fishermen's associations
